Alfred Tenore is the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education, and Professor of Pediatrics, of Aria University of Science and Medicine, Milpitas/Stockton, California. Over the past 40+ years, he has served as Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Vice Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology, and Director of the Pediatric Residency Program at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans, LA.; Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Associate Dean for Medical Education of the University of Udine, Udine, Italy; Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Assessment at California Northstate University College of Medicine, Elk Grove, California, and Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education, founding Chair of the Department of Medical Education of California University of Science and Medicine, Colton, California. An internationally known scholar, educator, pediatric endocrinologist, and ethicist, he has held professorial appointments in pediatrics, medical ethics and medical humanities.
Dr. Tenore is a leader in developing innovative curricula and institutional affiliations both in academic medical centers and across different levels of higher education. While Dean of medical education at the University of Udine School of Medicine, the school was selected as the top-ranking medical school in Italy for 9 consecutive years.
Dr. Tenore earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biology, from Seton Hall University in South Orange NJ and his M.D., summa cum laude, from the University of Naples School of Medicine, Naples, Italy. He spent approximately 1 year at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda MD, before deciding to pursue a career in clinical medicine. He completed his pediatric residency and pediatric endocrine fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia where he remained on its staff as Assistant professor of Pediatrics and was recipient of a 3-year NIH grant as principal investigator. His expertise in Pediatric Endocrinology and education have taken him to cross the Atlantic on several occasions to organize Endocrine Divisions, Pediatric Departments, Residency as well as undergraduate medical education programs where he has been instrumental in the development and implementation of new curriculum models. He has received numerous teaching awards and professional and educational recognitions both in Europe and the United States.
Dr. Tenore has been President of the European Academy of Pediatrics as well as the European Board of Pediatrics. He was Vice President of the Italian National Council of Vice Deans for Medical Education, Assessor for the Italian Ministry of Health for the Evaluation of Medicinal Specialties in Europe, Member of the Italian Examining Council for Ph.D. Programs, and many more.
He was the founding Chair of the Global Pediatric Education Consortium (GPEC), Vice Chair of the Council for European Specialty Medical Assessment of the European Union of Medical Specialties (CESMA-UEMS), member of the European Training Requirements (ETR) Review Committee of UEMS and President of the Italian National Medical Licensure Examination Committee. Dr Tenore was responsible for the implementation, overseeing, and nationwide administration of “Progress Testing” in all 6 academic years of the 50 medical schools in Italy for 13 consecutive years. He was also co-responsible for the annual 2-week residential European-sponsored/International Intensive Program in “Bioethics Applied to Clinical Practice.” which ran for 20 years.
Dr. Tenore has held eight editorial positions, has refereed for numerous international journals in the fields of medicine, pediatrics and endocrinology, has over 200 published papers. and is the co-editor and co-author of the pediatric textbook “European Mastercourse in Paediatrics”
Aside from being a member of numerous specialty-related Societies, Dr. Tenore is also a member of the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE), and of the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE), an international association for medical education.
